A weekend of vineyards in south Wales

Welsh vineyards are scattered across the whole country, but Monmouthshire and the Vale of Glamorgan have enough of them close together for a proper weekend. This plan spends Saturday around Abergavenny and Raglan and Sunday near Cowbridge.

The trip at a glance

  • How long: Two days (Saturday and Sunday)
  • Best time: June to August, when all five vineyards are open. The Dell opens only on summer Saturdays, and St Hilary takes visitors from late May to early autumn.
  • Where to base yourself: Abergavenny for the first night, close to all three Monmouthshire vineyards. For the second, stay at Llanerch itself or in Cowbridge.
  • Getting there: Abergavenny and Raglan are on the A40 and A465, and the Vale of Glamorgan stops are a few minutes off the M4. Abergavenny is on the train line from Newport and Cardiff to Hereford, and Pontyclun, on the main line west of Cardiff, is about a mile and a half from Llanerch. There is no public transport to the Monmouthshire vineyards, so book taxis in advance or bring a driver who won’t be drinking.

Opening days and prices checked on each vineyard’s own website in October 2026. See every Wales vineyard for more.

Day 1 (Saturday): Monmouthshire

Three small vineyards within about 20 minutes of each other. Saturday is the only day all three open, and only in summer.

Late morning

White Castle Vineyard

Book the 11.30am tour of the vineyard and winery with the owners, which ends with a tasting of four wines. Tours run Friday to Sunday at 11.30am and 3pm and are booked on the website, which doesn’t give a price. Without a tour, you can still taste or have wine by the glass at the cellar door, with Welsh cheese and charcuterie platters; in summer it opens Friday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. The ruins of White Castle are about two-thirds of a mile away.

Lunch

Sugar Loaf Vineyards

The licensed coffee shop at the foot of the Sugar Loaf does light lunches, cake and cheese platters, and you can order a tray of tasters of its Welsh wines, with notes. From late September it opens at weekends only, Saturday 10.30am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 4.30pm, plus bank holiday Mondays. You can walk in, but book at busy times. Groups are capped at eight, and dogs are welcome.

No need to book

Afternoon

The Dell Vineyard

In summer The Dell opens every Saturday from 12pm to 6pm, for wine by the glass or bottle, and you can walk the vines on your own for free. The guided tour with a tasting of the full range is £25, takes about two hours and has to be booked. On the first Saturday of the month in spring and summer there is a food pop-up. Any other day, bring a picnic. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

Book ahead

Food: Lunch at the Sugar Loaf coffee shop, then dinner in Abergavenny. The Oak Room at the Angel Hotel on Cross Street is a reliable choice.

Getting between them: About 15 minutes from White Castle to Sugar Loaf, then about 20 minutes from Sugar Loaf to The Dell at Raglan.

Day 2 (Sunday): the Vale of Glamorgan

Two vineyards about 15 minutes apart near Cowbridge. One has a hotel and restaurant, and the other you visit by private arrangement.

Late morning and lunch

Llanerch Vineyard

The Llanerch Wine Tasting Experience is £25 for three Cariad wines and lasts about an hour to an hour and a half. Book and pay for it online. It runs all year, outdoors among the vines in summer when the weather allows and in the Tasting Lodge in winter. Arrive 15 minutes early. If you have a table booked at Roots afterwards, allow an hour and a half from the start.

Afternoon

St Hilary Vineyard

A small family vineyard about a mile from Cowbridge, offering private tours and tastings for two to six people, arranged ahead by email or phone. It doesn’t publish a price. Visitors are welcome from late May to early autumn, so get in touch well before your trip to agree a time. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome, and the grass can be long and uneven.

Buy a bottle, £23.95

Food: Sunday roast at Roots, Llanerch’s restaurant, booked ahead. Cowbridge high street has more cafés and restaurants.

Getting between them: About 40 miles from Abergavenny to Llanerch, 50 minutes to an hour, then about 15 minutes on to St Hilary.

In winter

Llanerch is the safe bet in winter. Its tasting experience runs indoors all year, and Roots serves lunch, dinner and Sunday roasts. Sugar Loaf’s coffee shop opens at weekends. The Dell and St Hilary close for the season, and White Castle doesn’t publish winter hours, so ring first. At Christmas there are wreath-making evenings at Sugar Loaf on 25 November and at Llanerch on 29 and 30 November 2026.

Tips

  • Go on a summer Saturday. The Dell opens only on Saturdays (and the odd Sunday), and White Castle is closed Monday to Thursday.
  • Contact St Hilary weeks ahead, as its tours are private and by arrangement only.
  • Book a table at Roots for Sunday lunch when you book the Llanerch tasting. Both get busy at weekends.
  • Put The Dell’s full address, Clytha Road, Raglan, into your satnav. The postcode covers a wide area.
  • Sugar Loaf takes groups of no more than eight, children included.

Questions people ask

Which Welsh vineyards can I visit in one weekend?

Welsh vineyards are far apart, so pick one area. In the south-east, White Castle, Sugar Loaf and The Dell are within about 20 minutes of each other around Abergavenny and Raglan. Llanerch and St Hilary are about 15 minutes apart near Cowbridge, roughly an hour’s drive away.

Do I need to book Welsh vineyard tours?

For tours, yes. Llanerch’s tasting is paid in advance, The Dell’s and White Castle’s tours are booked ahead, and St Hilary’s are by private arrangement. You can drop in for a glass at White Castle, The Dell and Sugar Loaf when they are open, though Sugar Loaf advises booking at busy times.

Can I reach the vineyards by train?

Llanerch is about a mile and a half from Pontyclun station, a short taxi ride. Abergavenny station is the nearest for White Castle and Sugar Loaf, but there is no public transport on to the vineyards, so book a taxi in advance.
