Visiting Sugar Loaf Vineyards

Sugar Loaf Vineyards sits on the south-facing slopes of the Sugar Loaf, just outside Abergavenny, and has grown vines since 1992. Most people come for lunch in the licensed coffee shop, where a tray of four of the vineyard’s wines costs £6, and wander the vines on their own afterwards.

About Sugar Loaf Vineyards

The first vines went in on the lower slopes of the Sugar Loaf in 1992. The vineyard now covers five acres with about 5,000 vines of seven varieties, and makes white, rosé, red and sparkling wines. It sits inside Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, with a brook running along the bottom of the site.

Over the years the wines have won awards in regional and national competitions, the vineyard says, and they carry quality status under the official wine standards scheme. These days the vineyard is as much a café as a cellar door. The licensed coffee shop and its terrace are where the wines are poured, and the business also runs seasonal evenings such as a wreath-making class in late November.

The wines

The vineyard does not list its wines by name online, so the tray is the way to find out what is open. It gives you two whites, a rosé and a red. We’d go for the 50ml measures if someone else is driving, as 25ml is barely a mouthful. Sparkling wine is part of the range, so ask whether a bottle is available. For anyone not drinking wine there are local ales, Welsh cider including Gwynt y Ddraig, and a good list of soft drinks. Where to buy them.

Tours and tastings at Sugar Loaf Vineyards

Think of this as a lunch stop with wine rather than a tour. Walk round the vines first, then order the larger tasting tray with a cheese platter or a bowl of Welsh lamb cawl. The group limit of eight, adults and children combined, is strict because of the size of the kitchen, and extra people turning up on the day may not be seated. Hen and stag parties are not taken. Book for busy summer weekends, and arrive within 15 minutes of your table time or it will be given away. From late September it is a weekends-only place, which catches out anyone planning a weekday visit.

The vineyard is on Pentre Lane on the north-west edge of Abergavenny, below the Sugar Loaf. Abergavenny station, on the line from Newport and Cardiff to Hereford, is the nearest, and a taxi from there is short. Booking one in advance is sensible.

Make a day of it

White Castle Vineyard at Llanvetherine is about 15 minutes away by car and The Dell at Raglan about 20, so on a summer Saturday all three can be done in a day. Abergavenny has plenty of places to eat, and the Sugar Loaf itself is a popular walk if you want to earn your lunch.
