Visiting Velfrey Vineyard

Andy and Fiona Mounsey founded Velfrey in 2016 on a south-facing slope near Narberth, and its traditional method sparkling wines are why people come. Guided tastings run all year in the visitor centre, mostly in the mornings, and vineyard tours return in April.

About Velfrey

Velfrey is a family-run vineyard and winery in south Pembrokeshire, founded in 2016 by Andy and Fiona Mounsey. It has more than 5,500 vines on nearly three acres of south-facing clay loam at Lampeter Velfrey, a few miles east of Narberth.

Three grapes are grown: Pinot Noir and Seyval Blanc for sparkling wine, and Solaris for its perfumed whites. All the sparkling wines are made by the traditional method and carry the Welsh PGI. The 2022 vintage spent 38 months on its lees, and in 2026 it won silver at the WineGB Awards and bronze at the Decanter World Wine Awards. The vineyard also won a tourism innovation award at the Visit Pembrokeshire Croeso Awards in 2022, and runs an adopt-a-vine scheme.

The wines

The 2022 Vintage, a blend of Seyval Blanc and Pinot Noir with 38 months on the lees, is the bottle to buy if you are going to splash out, at £45. The Non-Vintage sparkling (£36) is the easier price, and Rhosyn 2023 is the sparkling rosé. Among the still wines, Naturiol is an unusual one: Seyval Blanc fermented with wild yeast after long skin contact, a low-alcohol dry white with a touch of oak. Coch 2025 is a red made entirely from Rondo. Where to buy them.

Tours and tastings at Velfrey

Velfrey keeps morning hours for most of the week, with Saturday the longest day, so plan a visit before lunch rather than after. From now until April the tasting is the way in, and it is short enough to fit into a morning in Narberth. In summer we’d book the tour instead, since it covers the vineyard as well as the wines, and add a sharing board. Ring before a long drive, as the vineyard says its hours can vary. Bookings with food need 72 hours’ notice to cancel, or a fee of 5% plus VAT applies, though a voucher can be offered instead. The what3words address for the entrance is whirlwind.year.submerge.
